Euro Area Inflation Surpasses ECB Target as Energy Costs Soar
Inflation in the Euro Area has worsened, according to the latest data. Headline inflation rose by 0.5% month-to-month in July after falling by 0.1% in June. Core inflation increased by 0.3%, accelerating from a 0.1% rise in June.
The increase in headline inflation was led by categories such as housing and utilities costs, transportation, education, and hotels and restaurants. These sectors experienced significant price hikes due to rising energy costs. In contrast, food, clothing, furnishing, household equipment, communication, recreation, and culture inflation remain below 2%.
The ECB's target pace of 2% is now being exceeded by headline inflation at 2.9% over 12 months. Core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, has also surpassed the target at 2.5%. The graph provided shows that inflation is overshooting in each of the four largest monetary union members.
