Euro Banknotes Set for First Comprehensive Redesign Since Introduction

The European Central Bank (ECB) is inviting citizens to vote on the design of new euro banknotes, which have not been redesigned in over 20 years. The survey, which ends today at 23:59 CET, offers ten designs divided into two themes: 'European culture: shared cultural spaces' and 'Rivers and birds: sustainability in diversity'. Each theme has five options, according to ECB President Christine Lagarde, who described the proposals as 'very strong'.

The redesign aims to make euro banknotes more relatable to Europeans while improving their security, durability, and accessibility. The Governing Council is expected to take a final decision on the design by the end of the year, based on comments from citizens and an independent representative study. The selected design will then be further developed and tested before going into production.
