Euro Expansion Plans Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
The European Central Bank has announced amendments to its monetary policy implementation guidelines as part of a regular review. ECB President Christine Lagarde stated that the bank plans to expand currency safety nets to make it easier for foreign central banks to borrow euros, with the goal of strengthening the single currency's global standing.
The decision comes amid concerns over financial fragmentation and growing uncertainty around the future of the US dollar. In a separate development, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has noted that the Middle East conflict remains unresolved, with scenarios of higher inflation and lower activity than forecast. The RBA cited broadened conflicts in the region and increased global energy prices as contributing factors.
The RBA also stated that growth in output has slowed but was stronger than expected in the June quarter, while labor market conditions have eased broadly as expected in recent months. Additionally, the bank reported that business investment and debt are strong, with heightened uncertainties about the outlook for domestic economic activity and inflation remaining.
