Euro Finds Temporary Floor Against Dollar Amid Ongoing Challenges
The euro may have found a temporary floor against the dollar after last week's Federal Reserve rate hike, but it still faces significant challenges. According to Thu Lan Nguyen, Head of FX and Commodity Research at Commerzbank, the pair has stabilized around levels just below $1.15.
This stabilization is largely due to the unwinding of selling pressure that built up during the Fed's hawkish meeting on September 16th. However, this floor looks fragile, and any recovery in the euro may be short-lived.
The euro's domestic backdrop remains a concern, with soaring German wholesale power prices and political uncertainty in France and Germany working to temper European Central Bank hike expectations. This is likely to continue to weigh on the euro, making it harder for the ECB to raise interest rates and eroding the higher returns that attract buyers to the currency.
German power prices are particularly concerning, as they not only raise costs for the bloc's largest manufacturing economy but also squeeze growth. A weaker growth outlook makes it even more challenging for the ECB to keep raising interest rates, which in turn affects the euro's value.
