Euro Hits New Record High Against Romanian Leu
The euro reached a new record high against the Romanian leu on Tuesday, according to the National Bank of Romania (NBR). The exchange rate was set at 5.3527 lei per euro, marking an increase of 2.21 bani from the previous session. This surpasses the previous record of 5.3447 lei per euro, which was recorded on October 2. The appreciation of the euro comes amid renewed pressure on the leu, partly due to political uncertainties following the nomination of a fourth prime minister.
The US dollar also saw a rise, with the NBR setting the exchange rate at 4.7616 lei per dollar, up from 4.7569 lei the day before. The pound sterling followed a similar trend, increasing to 6.3036 lei from 6.2894 lei. Conversely, the Swiss franc experienced a slight depreciation, dropping from 5.7358 lei to 5.7285 lei.
The political situation in Romania is contributing to the volatility in the foreign exchange market, as the newly nominated prime minister faces challenges in securing parliamentary approval to form a government. This uncertainty is amplifying the pressure on the leu, leading to the appreciation of other major currencies.
