European Central Bank Launches Digital Euro Project
The European Central Bank's digital euro project has officially launched, aiming to bring central bank money into the digital age. The digital euro is designed to complement physical cash and ensure everyone in the euro area can use a public, trusted, and universally accepted means of payment.
The current payments ecosystem in Europe is still fragmented across markets and relies heavily on non-European companies for digital transactions. Approximately 61% of euro area card transactions are facilitated through international card schemes.
The ECB has published its latest draft version of the digital rulebook, with a Eurosystem's digital euro pilot planned for 2027 and a potential first issuance for the digital euro in 2029. The legislative process, technical readiness, and market engagement need to be addressed within this timeline.
