Eurozone Bond Yields Remain Near Multi-Year Highs Amid Energy and Political Uncertainty

The Eurozone bond yields have remained near multi-year highs as investors grapple with rising energy prices and fresh political uncertainty in Germany ahead of the European Central Bank's (ECB) meeting on Thursday.

Government bond yields tend to rise when investors expect higher inflation or anticipate that central banks will maintain high interest rates. Currently, the ECB is expected to hike again, but markets are concerned about whether this will be a one-off move or the start of a prolonged pause in rate increases.

The energy crisis is adding to the uncertainty, with Brent crude oil prices closing in on $100 a barrel and Dutch benchmark wholesale gas prices near their highest since late 2022. This can contribute to households' and businesses' inflation expectations.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party's win in a state election has also raised concerns about political uncertainty in the bloc's largest economy, which could spill into broader eurozone risk pricing.
