Eurozone Inflation Surges to 3.8% Amid Elevated Energy Prices
The Eurozone's inflation rate has surged to 3.8% in September, marking its fastest jump since March of this year.
This increase exceeds expectations and is largely driven by energy prices, which are expected to remain elevated for some time.
Euro 95 petrol prices have reached an all-time high, significantly weighing on the inflation basket. Despite oil prices being somewhat lower than their peaks in 2022 and this spring, these higher fuel costs continue to drive inflation.
However, broader inflationary pressures are mounting as other price categories begin to show signs of increased pass-through from higher energy costs.
Core inflation rose from 2.4% to 2.5%, while food inflation ticked up from 1.1% to 1.4%. ECB President Christine Lagarde expressed her surprise at the limited pass-through of higher energy costs to other inflation categories in a recent press conference.
