Fed Faces Dilemma: Raise Rates or Hold Steady Ahead of September Meeting

The upcoming Fed meeting on September 16 has sparked debate over whether to raise interest rates or hold steady. The market is pricing in a 60% chance of a rate hike, with futures suggesting further hikes possible at subsequent meetings.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's comments on August 28 signaled his intention to restore credibility to the Fed's pledge to bring inflation back to 2%. He stated that recent benign inflation readings hadn't convinced him the trend was improving meaningfully. Warsh emphasized the importance of restoring confidence in the Fed's commitment to its objective, saying 'we have work to do.'

The prosecution's case for a rate hike is bolstered by strong August BLS employment data, which saw 162,000 jobs added, more than triple the expected number. New York Fed President John Williams attributed this to the strength of the economy, while Beth Hammack, President of the Cleveland Fed, argued that current rates aren't restrictive enough to bring inflation back to 2%.

The defense's case for holding rates steady focuses on recent weak employment data and revisions to past reports. Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin described the labor market as 'not loose, not tight, just sort of been a weak balance.' The defense also notes that July's CPI report was benign, with inflation rising only 0.1% month-over-month.
