Fed Hawkish Stance Fuels Optimism Amid Oil Price Fears
Investors are cautiously optimistic about the Federal Reserve's commitment to fighting inflation, but remain wary of oil prices and artificial intelligence (AI) risks.
Last week's hawkish Fed message restored credibility and provided clarity on its reaction function, according to Barclays Plc strategists. The S&P 500 swung between gains and losses as the 10-year Treasury yield again tested 5%.
Oil prices have retreated, but Brent crude remains above $100 a barrel. Barclays' Emmanuel Cau noted that it's difficult to see rates and equities fully stabilizing until energy-related inflation pressures ease.
Despite this caution, US equity fundamentals remain supportive, with robust earnings growth, contained credit spreads, and subdued VIX levels. Societe Generale SA strategist Manish Kabra expects the S&P 500 to reach 8,000 by year-end, provided an inversion is avoided.
