Fed October rate hike odds plummet to 25 percent
Nick Timiraos, the chief economics correspondent at the Wall Street Journal, has reported a significant shift in trader expectations regarding a potential Federal Reserve rate hike. Kevin Warsh, a former Fed official, has urged investors to prioritize economic data over central bank guidance. However, two of Warsh's deputies recently intervened, leading to a sharp drop in the probability of an October rate hike from 70% to around 25%, even before any major new data releases.
Ahead of the October decision, Timiraos noted that investors had anticipated a rate hike for the first time in three years, though future moves remained uncertain. Fed governor Michael Barr highlighted limited progress on core PCE inflation, suggesting that further policy action might be necessary. These developments underscore ongoing debates about interpreting economic signals and central bank communications.
