Fed Raises Interest Rates Amid Inflation Concerns

The US Federal Reserve has raised interest rates for the first time in three years, leaving some wondering if this marks the beginning of a new major tightening cycle. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh told reporters that he won't 'prejudge any future decisions we make,' but updated forecasts show a majority of policymakers expect one more rate increase this year.

Traders anticipate the Fed to raise rates again in December, and some analysts believe inflation could surprise to the upside, pushing interest rates even higher. The current 'dot plot' shows officials expecting a total 50 basis points increase in interest rates this year.

The Federal Reserve's most recent major rate-rising cycle occurred in 2022 to combat increasing inflation from an energy shock after Russia's invasion of Ukraine and post-Covid supply chain bottlenecks. Inflation at the time peaked above nine percent, and the Fed raised interest rates from near zero to between 5.25 and 5.5 percent over a period of two years.

However, some experts caution against reading too much into the dot plot, which has a poor track record and can mislead markets. Michael Pearce, chief US economist at Oxford Economics, believes the latest decision was the Fed exercising risk management rather than starting a new series of tightening measures.
