Fed Torn Over Next Move as Economy Grows and Inflation Persists
Despite a slowdown in economic growth from the first to second quarter, the US economy is still growing at a healthy pace of 2.2%. This robust expansion is being driven by strong consumer spending and business investment, with consumer spending making up around 70% of U.S. economic activity.
Inflation remains a concern, however, as prices rose 3.4% in August compared to a year ago, above the Federal Reserve's target of 2%. Core prices, which strip out volatile food and energy categories, increased by 3%, also higher than the Fed's target.
Fed officials are now debating how quickly to act on interest rates to combat inflation. With consumer spending showing no signs of slowing and risks that inflation will remain high, economists and investors anticipate another rate increase before the end of the year.
