Fed Watchdog Flags Retiring Staffer's Multiple Data Breach Attempts
The Federal Reserve's in-house watchdog has flagged multiple instances of potential data breaches by a retiring staff member. The employee, who worked in the central bank's Division of International Finance and retired in July 2024, was found to have attempted to remove confidential information on several occasions.
According to the Fed's Inspector General report, the departing employee generated alerts due to printing, copying data to a notepad application, sending sensitive information via email to personal addresses, and transferring files to an unencrypted USB device. The IG stated that many of these alerts were false positives, but it was unclear what specific information had been removed.
The report highlighted systemic concerns about the Fed's exit process for employees with access to confidential policymaking information. The IG recommended improving data management policies and procedures, which the Fed concurred with. The central bank has taken steps to better communicate these policies and is working to address violations more effectively.
