Federal Reserve Resists Rate Hike Amid Rising Inflation
The Federal Reserve maintained interest rates at their current level despite rising inflation concerns. The Fed's dual mandate is to support jobs and stable prices, and its target inflation rate is 2%. Currently, the inflation rate stands at 3.5%, which has risen since the start of the year due to a spike in energy prices.
Chair Kevin Warsh presided over the meeting for the second time since taking over from Jerome Powell, who remains a member of the Federal Reserve Board. Three members voted to increase interest rates by 0.25%, but the majority decided to keep them steady.
The Fed's decision can have an indirect effect on consumers through mortgage rates and borrowing costs. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage was 6.58% as of Wednesday, down from 6.74% a year earlier.
