Fed's Williams Sees Easing Inflation, Emphasizes Price Stability
Federal Reserve President John Williams emphasized the importance of price stability for the economy during a recent speech at the University of Buffalo. He noted that inflation should temper because the 'biggest shocks' have largely played out, and the September rate hike was aimed at creating a swifter return to 2% inflation.
Williams also highlighted the impact of energy prices on the economy, stating that they remain very important but that the US is less exposed relative to past periods. He expressed his expectation that depending on the path of the war, there may not be a further surge in energy prices.
The New York Federal Reserve President added that determining how restrictive monetary policy is can be challenging and emphasized the need for data-driven decision-making. He also touched on the impact of AI on asset market valuations, productivity gains, and the natural rate of interest.
