Fuel Price Surge Hits NZ Households and Businesses
The June 2026 quarter saw households and businesses in New Zealand experience higher fuel prices. Recent supply disruptions contributed to this increase, with petrol prices rising 20.1 percent over the quarter. Diesel prices increased by a significant 47.7 percent.
According to data from Stats NZ, the quarterly gross domestic product (GDP) grew by just 0.2 percent. Consumer inflation was driven higher by the surge in fuel prices. The volume of retail sales fell during this period.
The annual number of new homes consented exceeded 40,000. This indicates a growing construction sector, but it is unclear whether this trend will continue.
