GBP/CAD Volatility Ahead as Growth Data and Oil Prices Take Center Stage
The Pound to Canadian Dollar (GBP/CAD) exchange rate experienced significant volatility last week, influenced by UK and Canadian GDP data, manufacturing PMIs, and oil price swings.
The GBP/CAD rate briefly slid to a 16-day high due to turbulence in the oil market before recovering. At the time of writing, it was trading at CA$1.8732, virtually unchanged on the week.
UK consumer confidence declined sharply, pushing Sterling lower, while government borrowing rose significantly in August. The Pound struggled further after the UK services PMI dropped more than expected and another indicator pointed to weakening consumer spending.
However, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey's caution that sustained energy price increases could make it harder for the central bank to keep interest rates from rising helped Sterling regain some ground at the end of the week.
