GBP Falls to Lowest Level Since July Despite Committee Leaning Towards Rate Hike

The British Pound Sterling (GBP) fell to its lowest level since July against the US dollar after the Bank of England's interest rate decision. The central bank left the Bank Rate at 3.75%, with three of nine policymakers voting for a hike to 4%. This suggests a committee leaning towards an increase, but the GBP still declined.

The UK inflation rate reached 3.1% in August, its highest level since March, driven mainly by motor fuel prices. However, Bank Governor Andrew Bailey argued that indirect energy pass-through has been weaker than expected, and evidence of second-round effects is limited. He also pointed out that domestic inflationary pressure continues to ease and the labor market is soft.

The market still predicts a 74% chance of a quarter-point increase at the November meeting and expects Bank Rate to reach 4.18% by the end of the year. This would make the GBP more expensive than the dollar for now, but the explanation lies in the currency's pricing mechanisms rather than fundamental factors.

The Pound Sterling is priced to out-yield the Dollar and fell anyway. The market expects four increases and a rate of 4.71% twelve months out, which is higher than the Federal Reserve's expected rate of 4.60%. This could be due to timing, as the Bank of England does not meet again until November 5.
