GBP/JPY Consolidation Ahead of Key Rate Decision
The GBP/JPY currency pair has seen a decline in recent sessions, but is currently consolidating within a narrow range. The British pound's value against the Japanese yen has been impacted by expectations of an interest rate hike by the Bank of Japan on September 18th.
Bank of Japan board member Masu warned that rates may need to rise more rapidly if inflation accelerates, which could further strengthen the yen and put downward pressure on the GBP/JPY. This shift in market psychology has changed the dynamics of the cross, as it historically benefited from the carry trade differential.
Recent intervention by the Japanese government, which involved buying ¥15.4 trillion worth of their own currency, has contributed to the yen's strength and reduced carry trade activity across all yen crosses. The British pound itself is not necessarily weak, with a stable value against the US dollar and rising UK gilt yields.
However, the interest rate differential between the Bank of Japan and the Bank of England will start to shrink, which could have implications for the GBP/JPY trend. A bounce from current levels around ¥207 may occur, but breaking above ¥210 is uncertain. If the pair falls, the ¥205 level will likely come into focus.
