GBP/JPY Slips as Japanese Yen Gains Strength Amid Intervention Fears
The Japanese Yen (JPY) is strengthening against its major peers, including the British Pound (GBP), amidst growing concerns that Tokyo may intervene in currency markets to curb the JPY's weakness. At press time, the GBP/JPY exchange rate hovers around 208.20, nearing September's low of 207.
Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama warned on Tuesday that an undervalued Yen poses problems, and Tokyo will maintain close talks with the US Treasury to ensure stable foreign exchange markets. This comes after Japan's top currency diplomat, Atsushi Mimura, expressed concerns about recent currency moves, stating that markets should take Tokyo and Washington's warnings 'at face value.' Mimura also said he was neither satisfied nor reassured by recent market developments.
The British Pound's outlook remains fragile, with analysts at HSBC warning that weak UK labor demand and sluggish private sector momentum may weigh on the GBP in the near term. The Bank of England is expected to tighten monetary policy by July 2027, but higher energy prices create a difficult policy mix for policymakers.
