GBP/USD Tumbles on PPI Release as Central Bank Rate Advantage Fades
The GBP/USD exchange rate fell to 1.3523 on Thursday after the release of August's producer price index, which came in at a higher-than-expected 5.4% annually.
However, the pair had been trading near this level for much of the week, and the decline was largely driven by a reversal of earlier gains rather than any significant change in sentiment.
The Bank of England's decision to hold interest rates at 3.75%, combined with the Federal Reserve's target range of 3.50% to 3.75%, has effectively eliminated the substantial interest rate advantage the dollar enjoyed for most of the past three years.
This structural change in how cable should trade means that the pair is now a pure contest of which central bank moves next and in which direction, rather than being driven by policy spreads.
