Giorgetti: ECB Rate Hikes Won't Tame Italian Inflation
Italian Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of European Central Bank (ECB) interest rate hikes in addressing inflation. In a recent meeting with EU peers and monetary policy officials, including ECB President Christine Lagarde, Giorgetti stated that inflation is primarily driven by supply shocks rather than excessive demand or an overheated economy.
Giorgetti acknowledged that interest rate increases can provide some relief but emphasized that they do not address the root cause of the problem. This view aligns with those previously expressed by Deputy Prime Ministers Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini, who have criticized the ECB's policy on multiple occasions.
The Italian government has implemented a temporary tax cut on diesel fuel to protect consumers from rising energy prices, which Giorgetti warned will continue to rise if ongoing conflicts persist. Lagarde reiterated the ECB's stance that support measures for households and companies should be targeted, temporary, and tailored to address inflation costs while allowing for quick removal when conditions improve.
