Government Spending Transparency Under Fire as Debt Concerns Mount
Desjardins deputy chief economist Randall Bartlett has raised concerns about the lack of transparency in government spending, citing the recent spring economic update and its potential impact on Canada's economy.
Bartlett notes that the federal government may have spent up to $40 billion beyond what was laid out in the spring economic statement, with unclear funding sources for several major announcements, including a national AI strategy, national food security strategy, West Coast oil pipeline project, and the Canada-British Columbia Cooperative Prosperity Agreement.
The total cost of these four announcements could range from $35.2 billion to $43.7 billion, according to Bartlett's report, without any clearly outlined source of funding.
Bartlett also warns that if these spending announcements were not accounted for in the spring economic update, Canada's federal debt-to-GDP ratio could rise faster and to a higher level than projected, potentially reaching nearly a full percentage point higher by 2035.
