Hemp Market Uncertainty Looms as Federal Rules Approach

Hemp acreage across the Ninth Federal Reserve District plummeted by 85 percent from its peak in 2019, reaching an alarming low by 2025. Despite this decline, national hemp acreage rebounded 34 percent that year, and production value increased a substantial 64 percent.

This contradictory trend has left growers uncertain about their future prospects in the market. The collapse of hemp acreage was largely due to oversupply, which pressured prices and caused CBD values to fall by 15 percent year over year in April.

The industry faces additional uncertainty with a federal hemp definition change scheduled to take effect on November 12. This new policy could restrict intoxicating products made from hemp-derived THC, including popular items such as gummies and beverages.
