Hyperscalers' $295 Billion Investment Boom Triggers AI Inflation Wave
The four largest US hyperscalers - Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft - have invested an unprecedented $294.8 billion in property and equipment in the first half of 2026, a 84.1% increase from the same period last year.
This massive investment boom has outpaced productivity growth, with US nonfarm business productivity rising only 2.2% year-over-year in the second quarter.
The disparity between investment and productivity is fueling what economists are calling 'AI inflation,' where demand for computing equipment, electricity, and capital is growing faster than productive capacity can keep up.
The impact of AI inflation is already being felt in various sectors, with prices of AI-relevant goods surging despite flat or falling export prices elsewhere. Energy remains a major driver of current US inflation, but the AI buildout is exerting pressure on chip and power supplies, leading to higher costs for businesses and consumers.
According to the Bank of England, AI-related global export-price pressure could add around 0.1 percentage points to UK consumer-price inflation by the end of 2026, mainly through higher prices for technology imports and components such as memory chips.
