India Set to Revive Plastic Banknote Plans Amid Counterfeit Concerns

India is set to introduce plastic banknotes after nearly two decades of delays. The decision was made public by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary in a recent announcement in the Lok Sabha.

The Reserve Bank of Australia developed the world's first plastic banknote in 1988, following a high-profile case where four individuals created fake notes in a Melbourne garage. The counterfeiters were caught when one of the fake notes was used to buy chocolate and raised suspicions with a salesgirl.

Australia replaced its paper currency with polymer notes due to concerns about counterfeiting. The new notes feature advanced security features that made them difficult to replicate, requiring specialized technology and materials.

India first proposed plastic banknotes in 2009 but shelved the project in 2016. Now, the RBI has invited global proposals to manufacture plastic notes for a field trial of ₹10 and ₹20 denominations, with plans to introduce up to 200 crore notes worth ₹3,000 crore.

Proponents argue that plastic notes can last longer, resist water and oil, and are harder to counterfeit. They also require significant investment in infrastructure upgrades and may be more expensive to produce initially.
