Indian Black Money Floods into Swiss Banks, Hitting ₹37,600 Crore in 2024
The Swiss banking system has been a haven for Indian wealth holders, particularly those with black money. According to recent data, Indian-linked funds in Swiss banks have nearly tripled over the last three years, hitting ₹37,600 crore in 2024 after crashing 70% the previous year.
This significant increase is despite Switzerland sharing full account data with India every year since 2018 and the Swiss National Bank stating that this isn't black money. The fact that Indian wealth holders are increasingly trusting the Swiss banking system has raised concerns about how authorities will deal with this growing issue.
The phenomenon of Indian wealth being siphoned off to Swiss banks is largely due to the banking system's lack of apprehensions when it comes to accepting funds from various sources. This has led to a significant portion of India's wealthy population holding substantial amounts in these accounts, which are often used to conceal illicit financial activities.
The latest developments have sparked alarm as the volume of Indian black money held in Swiss bank accounts continues to rise. The Indian authorities will need to take swift action to address this issue and prevent further erosion of the country's wealth.
