Indian Stock Market Falls Amid US-Iran Tensions and Interest Rate Concerns
The Indian stock market closed lower on Monday due to fading hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough between the US and Iran, as well as concerns over inflation and interest rates. The Nifty 50 index fell by 0.39% to close at 24,080.40, while the Sensex declined by 0.40% to end at 76,957.27.
Escalating geopolitical tensions pushed crude oil prices higher, with Brent crude rising 3.34% to $91 per barrel. This has raised concerns over energy supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global route.
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, pointed out that the rise in crude prices is adding to inflationary pressure and affecting corporate profitability. He also noted that the US Federal Reserve chair's recent comments have increased expectations of a possible September rate hike, keeping global bond yields elevated.
However, stock-specific buying in the broader market and expectations of healthy GDP growth helped limit the decline in domestic benchmarks. Among Nifty 50 stocks, ICICI Bank, Grasim, Bajaj Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Industries, and Maruti were among the top gainers.
