Japan Raises Benchmark Interest Rate to 1-Year High Amid Yen Concerns
Japan's central bank has raised its benchmark interest rate to 1.25% from 1.0%, marking a significant increase and reaching a 31-year high. This decision was widely anticipated by global markets, particularly after the Federal Reserve raised its key rate earlier this week.
The move comes amid growing concerns about the weakening yen, with pressures mounting from the U.S. for Japan to raise rates. The nations have intervened together recently to prop up the currency, and the current exchange rate stands at around 155 yen per dollar.
The increase of 0.25 percentage points to the policy rate was seen as a necessary step to combat inflationary pressures and maintain economic stability in Japan.
