Japan's Strengthening Yen Threatens Era of Budget-Friendly Trips for Australian Travellers

Australians have flocked to Japan in recent years due to the country's relatively low cost, thanks to the declining value of the yen. With over 1 million Australians visiting Japan between 2025-26, a threefold increase from a decade ago, Tokyo has become one of the top destinations for Australian travellers.

The yen's decline was expected to continue, but recent interventions by Tokyo and Washington have stabilized its value against the US dollar and Australian dollar. Analysts at IG note that if the yen breaks through certain technical levels, it could rise to levels not seen since 2023.

Japanese authorities are concerned about the yen's decline driving up import costs for energy and food. The US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has warned traders against betting against efforts to bolster the yen.

Australians may soon find Japan less affordable due to the strengthening yen. Joseph Cheer, professor of sustainable tourism and heritage at Western Sydney University, notes that while Australians are tolerant of higher costs before reconsidering travel plans, a sustained rise in the yen could lead them to explore other Asian destinations.
