Joyce Accuses Labor Government of Overspending Ahead of Interest Rate Hike
Minister for Social Services Tanya Plibersek and One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce clashed over government spending on Sunrise, with Joyce accusing the Labor government of overspending.
The heated discussion centered around a looming interest rate hike, which is expected to be announced by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) on Tuesday. The RBA's official cash rate is predicted to rise to 4.6%, its highest level in 15 years.
Plibersek acknowledged that nobody wants to see rates go up, but argued that the government is trying to make things cheaper in other ways. She cited examples of reduced costs for medical visits and prescription medication.
Joyce countered by blaming the Labor government's 'discretionary spending' on 'intermittent power', which he claims has driven up prices. He suggested that refurbishing Australia's aging coal-fired power stations would be a more cost-effective solution, citing an estimate of $2 billion per station, although the actual cost is significantly lower.
Plibersek questioned Joyce's proposal to refurbish every power station in Australia and asked for specific figures on the Labor government's capacity investment scheme. Joyce accused Plibersek of 'destroying the economy' and keeping costs a secret.
