Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has issued a renewed warning to currency speculators, indicating that she remains ready to intervene in the foreign exchange market if necessary. This comes after the yen reached its weakest point against the US dollar this month, spurred by rising US inflation data.
Katayama emphasized that there has been no shift in the coordinated stance between Washington and Tokyo since their joint effort to support the yen in July. This intervention, which occurred amid significant yen depreciation, had been a rare and notable move by the two governments.
The finance minister's comments highlight ongoing concerns over the yen's depreciation, which has been a persistent issue for Japan. The weak yen can impact import costs and economic stability, making it a key focus for policymakers.
