Labor Market Remains Stable Amid Strong Job Gains
The labor market in the United States remains stable, according to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 162,000 in August, exceeding estimates of 53,000. This growth was driven by gains in food services and drinking places, as well as local government education, while the information industry saw a decline.
Revisions to prior months showed July's gain of 21,000 jobs, swinging from a loss of 23,000, and June's increase of 31,000, revised up from 20,000. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1%, with 7 million unemployed persons.
The labor force participation rate increased to 61.6%, with long-term unemployment accounting for 27% of the total. Chris Rupkey, chief economist at Fwdbonds, stated that 'the labor market is alive and well and generating thousands of new jobs to help keep economic growth squarely in the plus column.'
