Labour Accused of Softening Up Public for Brutal Budget
The UK is bracing for what could be another 'brutal budget' from Labour, according to SNP Westminster leader Dave Doogan. He claims that Prime Minister Andy Burnham's government is 'softening people up' for a series of cuts and tax rises in next month's budget.
The warning comes as inflation reached a five-month high of 3.1% in August, driven by high petrol and diesel costs. The Bank of England has warned that volatile global energy costs could push inflation even higher, making it more likely that interest rates will need to rise to bring prices back down to the 2% target.
With some households already facing an increase in energy costs come October, Doogan said the UK Government was 'cynically rolling the pitch' for another budget of cuts and tax rises. He argued that this would perpetuate a 'bad case of Westminster deja vu', where promises of change have failed to materialize.
The SNP leader emphasized that Scotland needs full independence to break free from the UK's economic woes and deliver transformative change for its people.
