Labour's Secret Aid Bill: Labour Promises Multi-Billion Dollar Spending Without Explanation
Labour's commitment to increase New Zealand's foreign aid to 0.7% of Gross National Income has been criticized for its lack of transparency and potential cost.
In a recent speech, Labour's Foreign Affairs Spokesperson made the promise without explaining how much it would cost or how it would be paid for.
If fulfilled from 2027/28, aid spending would almost triple in one year to $3.4 billion.
The commitment is on top of Labour's existing plan to increase foreign aid, which is estimated to cost an additional $6.5 billion over four years if phased in evenly by 2030/31.
This new spending promise comes after Labour's $18.8 billion hidden bill, which would cost the average Kiwi household $2,263 in extra tax per year.
