Lagarde's Binance Intervention Sparks Regulatory Uncertainty in Europe
ECB President Christine Lagarde's intervention in Binance's Greek licence bid has sent mixed signals to fintechs, undermining the foundation of MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation) and potentially deterring investment in the EU.
The move shows that clearing a national regulator's bar no longer guarantees an EU license. According to the Wall Street Journal, Lagarde intervened to delay Binance's Greek licence decision, which was initially expected to be made by the Greek authorities under MiCA.
Binance's own compliance record is questionable, with founder Changpeng Zhao serving US prison time and the exchange facing investigations in France and the UAE. However, the route taken by Lagarde raises concerns about the process and the potential for informal pressure on national regulators.
The European Central Bank (ECB) has been a public stablecoin sceptic, with Lagarde advocating for the digital euro instead. The ECB's actions may be seen as an attempt to slow down or block Binance's expansion in Europe, but this could have unintended consequences and undermine trust in the EU's regulatory framework.
