Lazy Savings: Europe's Capital Markets Challenge vs. Nigeria's Intermediation Issue

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently sparked controversy when she referred to European savings as 'lazy', stating that €10 trillion of household money is sitting in bank deposits. According to her, this amount could be put to work for European companies if properly allocated.

Von der Leyen's comments were aimed at promoting the EU's Savings and Investment Union, which seeks to unlock up to €470 billion in extra investment through proposals on securitisation, bank and insurer investment, and market supervision. However, her statement was met with criticism that it sounded like Brussels coming for people's accounts.

Despite some valid concerns about the EU's language, von der Leyen's comments are actually a reflection of Europe's own capital markets challenges. The continent's savings picture is characterized by high household savings rates and enormous bank deposits, but these funds often lack sufficient domestic investment plumbing to finance high-growth companies.

Contrasting Europe's situation with that of Nigeria, the article highlights the different challenges facing each economy. In Nigeria, households do not have a surplus of idle cash; instead, many Nigerians rely on informal means of saving and spend their money quickly due to inflationary pressures.
