Métis National Council Demands Meaningful Consultation on Bill C-39
The Métis National Council (MNC) is calling on the Government of Canada to engage in meaningful consultation regarding Bill C-39, a legislation that could have significant impacts on Métis communities. The MNC, along with the federally recognized Métis governments, submitted written submissions earlier this year but feel that further engagement is necessary. According to Section 5 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, the Government of Canada has a statutory obligation to ensure new legislation is consistent with indigenous rights.
The MNC believes that co-development of elements affecting Métis rights is required and that meaningful engagement from Canada is necessary. They expect the convening of constructive dialogue between Canada and Métis governments on this matter. As part of its research and advocacy mandate, the MNC has reviewed Bill C-39 against previous input provided to the Government of Canada and identified areas where Métis rights and interests may be impacted.
Métis governments are ready to work alongside Canada as full partners on projects of national interest, strengthening supply chains and the Canadian economy. Early partnership can create greater predictability, address impacts sooner, support efficient project development, and deliver better outcomes for projects and Métis communities.
