National Party Launches Campaign for Second Term
The National Party in New Zealand has launched its campaign for a second term in office. The party's message is clear: while progress has been made, there is still work to be done. Their focus areas include growing the economy, creating more jobs, keeping taxes down, backing frontline services, and continuing to build the necessary infrastructure for the future.
The latest Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Update (PREFU) provided encouraging news about New Zealand's economic outlook. Treasury forecasts show the government's finances improving more quickly than expected, with lower projected deficits, reduced borrowing requirements, and a stronger pathway back to surplus.
Key highlights from the update include: a return to surplus in 2028/29, borrowing $15 billion less than forecast, an economy growing at an average of 2.6%, wages rising faster than prices, 220,000 more jobs, and inflation falling to 1.9% by June 2027.
The government has also made progress on various fronts, including healthcare. The latest health target results show improvement in all five of the government's health targets, with more patients receiving cancer treatment faster, childhood immunization rates increasing, emergency department wait times improving, and fewer people waiting too long for elective procedures and specialist assessments.
Additionally, a new planning system is being introduced to replace the Resource Management Act, aiming to make it easier to build homes, infrastructure, and energy projects while maintaining environmental protections. The party has also highlighted its commitment to addressing crime, education, and other key issues.
