New Zealand Revises Economic Forecasts, Predicts Smaller Budget Deficit
New Zealand's government has revised its economic forecasts, predicting a smaller budget deficit and lower debt than previously expected. According to the Treasury, the operating balance before gains and losses (OBEGAL) deficit is now forecasted at NZ$8.73 billion ($4.94 billion) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027, down from the previous estimate of NZ$14.09 billion.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon attributed this improvement to his government's responsible economic management and expressed confidence in meeting these revised targets. However, opposition parties have criticized the government's handling of the economy, citing ongoing pressures on household budgets and a weak recovery.
The Treasury also predicts a return to an OBEGAL surplus by 2028-29, a year earlier than previously forecasted. While some economists agree that the forecasts are positive, others caution that the eventual fiscal consolidation depends on various factors, including future economic growth and government policies.
