The Tokyo Stock Exchange's Nikkei 225 index closed at 63,484.10 points on Tuesday, down just 8.89 points or 0.014% from Monday's close of 63,492.99.

The index saw a volatile session with a strong rally in the morning followed by a decline in the afternoon, but ultimately finished nearly flat.

Japan's benchmark index outperformed other major Asian benchmarks on Tuesday, despite global headwinds including rising oil prices and treasury yields.

The US 10-year Treasury note yield briefly touched 5.02% overnight, its highest level since 2007, as investors positioned ahead of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting.
