Northland Dry Dock Project Advances to Expert Review
The Northland Shipyard and Dry Dock project in Marsden Point has cleared a key hurdle, with its Fast-track application deemed complete by the Environmental Protection Authority. Regional Development Minister Shane Jones confirmed that the next step is an expert panel review. He called it a crucial milestone for this nationally significant infrastructure project, which aims to address New Zealand's lack of domestic ship maintenance facilities.
The government has allocated $100 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund to support the project. Jones highlighted the economic benefits, including job creation during construction and operation, as well as cost and emissions savings by reducing reliance on overseas dry docks. The facility will also keep maintenance revenue within New Zealand, boosting the economy.
The dry dock will support large vessels, including new inter-island ferries, reducing transit times and improving service availability. The project aligns with the New Zealand First-National coalition agreement and is expected to deliver lasting economic benefits to the Northland region.
