Nvidia Earnings Report Looms Large Ahead of Fed Chief's Jackson Hole Speech
Wall Street stocks experienced a mixed finish on Monday as investors awaited several key market-moving events scheduled for later in the week. The S&P 500 slipped 0.3% from its all-time high set earlier this month, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 140 points, or 0.3%. Tech stocks led the decline, with Nvidia down 2.9%, Micron Technology down 5.8%, and Broadcom down 2.6%.
The bond market has been a significant concern for investors, with longer-term Treasury yields rising through the summer due to worries about high inflation and government debt. The U.S. Treasury Department announced last week that it would increase the size of planned buybacks of Treasurys, but analysts warned this move may have limited impact.
Helping to ease concerns on Monday was a drop in oil prices, with Brent crude falling 2.3% to $90.54 per barrel. Despite this, Treasury yields remain a concern, and analysts warn that the U.S. government's attempts to influence the bond market could ultimately lead to higher pressure on inflation.
With the Federal Reserve's new chairman, Kevin Warsh, set to deliver a speech at an economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Friday, investors are eagerly anticipating his comments on inflation and potential interest rate hikes. Expectations are high that Warsh will address these concerns, but a failure to do so could lead to further increases in bond yields.
