NZD Slumps Despite US-Iran Deal Hopes as Unemployment Rate Surpasses Expectations

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) has been experiencing weakness against the US Dollar (USD), despite hopes of a breakthrough in the US-Iran deal. The NZD/USD pair fell to near 0.5870 during European trading hours on Wednesday, following the release of New Zealand's unemployment rate data. The unemployment rate jumped to 5.6% in the second quarter of 2026, surpassing market expectations of 5.4%, which weakened the case for aggressive interest rate hikes from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ).

Hopes of a US-Iran deal and the prospect of an interim agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz might help limit the NZD's losses, but the impact is expected to be limited. ING strategists suggest that the RBNZ may implement a more modest tightening path than previously inferred, with a possible 50bp 'insurance' cycle. This could lead to an earlier interest rate hike in September and a subsequent pause.

The technical analysis suggests that the NZD/USD pair maintains a constructive outlook on the daily chart, with the price holding above the Bollinger middle band and the 100-day simple moving average (SMA). However, a break below the lower band support around 0.5730 could signal a loss of bullish bias.
