NZD/USD Stalls Near 0.5665 as Firm US Yields Fuel Downside Bias
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) struggled to gain momentum on Friday, hovering around 0.5665 despite a modest decline in the US Dollar Index (DXY). The DXY fell by 0.22% to about 101.00, down from its peak of 101.40 reached on Thursday.
US Treasury yields remained firm, with the 10-year yield near 5.19%, just below the previous session's high of 5.22%. Economic data was mixed, with the final University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for September coming in at 48.1, above expectations but still below August's reading.
The Kiwi's inability to rise above 0.5665 suggests a lack of buying momentum, and derivative traders are advised to prepare for continued downward pressure on the NZD/USD pair. With US inflation expectations running high, particularly in one-year outlook at 4.6%, the Federal Reserve is likely to maintain higher interest rates, supporting the US dollar.
Historically, the current level of 0.5665 is close to a key support floor of 0.5512 reached during the global market sell-off in October 2022. A break below 0.5600 could lead to a quick decline towards multi-year lows.
