October Nonfarm Payrolls Could Shape Fed Rate Hike Expectations

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the October Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report on Friday at 13:30 GMT. Analysts expect a modest improvement, forecasting an increase of 65,000 jobs after September's disappointing gain of 29,000. The Unemployment Rate is projected to hold steady at 4.2%, while Average Hourly Earnings (AHE) are anticipated to rise by 0.3%, up from the previous 0.1%.

Market participants widely anticipate a 25 basis point rate hike by the Federal Reserve in December, but the NFP data could influence expectations for early 2027. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh described labor market conditions as 'positive,' suggesting that significant shifts in market pricing are unlikely unless the employment data surprises negatively.

TD Securities predicts a period of consolidation for the US Dollar (USD) into year-end, following its sharp rally since September. They note that softer labor market data could extend the Dollar's post-election pullback, with October NFP expected to remain subdued at 40,000 after September's moderation.

The US Dollar faced selling pressure midweek after Democrats won the midterm elections, fueling optimism about de-escalation in the Middle East and a crude oil price selloff. Analysts at ING caution that while near-term Dollar weakness is constrained, medium-term risks could shift if Democratic policies impact economic conditions.

A disappointing NFP print below 30,000 could exacerbate USD selloff, potentially dismissing a Fed rate hike in January. Conversely, a significant positive surprise above 80,000 could support the USD in the immediate term. However, investors may refrain from large positions ahead of next week's key inflation data.
