Oil Price Drop Boosts Markets, But Energy Crisis Lingers
The FTSE 100 index made significant gains on Wednesday as oil prices dropped, easing inflation concerns. European markets followed suit after strong performances in Asia.
Average crude exports from the Gulf have recovered to 17.5 million barrels per day, nearly back to pre-war levels of around 98%. The Strait of Hormuz is once again open for tanker traffic, and Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline has restarted following attacks.
However, this relief only goes so far. For Europe, the key issue remains the disparity between crude and refined fuel prices. Global diesel stocks are depleted, meaning prices at the pump won't be decreasing anytime soon.
