Pound Faces Headwinds as UK Economy Lags Behind US
HSBC's latest analysis suggests that the Pound (GBP) will face challenges due to weak UK labour demand and sluggish private sector momentum. This is particularly concerning given the more resilient state of the US economy.
The bank expects the Bank of England to tighten monetary policy, with markets already pricing in around 100bp of tightening by July 2027. However, rising energy prices create a difficult policy mix, as inflation risks rise even as growth momentum remains fragile.
Elevated gilt yields and the upcoming budget update on October 28th may add further pressure on the GBP/USD pair. The new Chancellor will have to make difficult fiscal choices in light of these challenges.
