Pound Gains Ground as UK Economy Outperforms Expectations
The British Pound (GBP) has been gaining strength against the Euro (EUR) in recent days, and this trend shows no signs of slowing down. The EUR/GBP cross has been on a downward trajectory for five consecutive days, trading at its lowest level since mid-August around 0.8537.
The Pound's resilience is largely attributed to stronger-than-expected economic growth data released by the UK last week, which showed a revised Q2 GDP of 0.5% and an annual growth rate of 1.4%. This has given the Bank of England (BoE) more room to raise interest rates and combat inflation.
BoE policymaker Catherine Mann emphasized the need for tighter monetary policy, stating that 'Current stance is not sufficiently tight.' She added that 'Raising rate can ensure sustainable return to 2%.'
The Eurozone, on the other hand, continues to grapple with concerns over high energy costs and inflation. ECB President Christine Lagarde noted that while higher inflation is expected, it has yet to become embedded.
